Saint of the Day тАФ 15 June
Saint Germaine Cousin
The Girl Nobody Wanted
By the world's standards тАФ
she had nothing.
Born in 1579
in Pibrac, France,
Germaine came into the world
already disadvantaged.
Her right hand was crippled
from birth.
She suffered from scrofula тАФ
a disease of the lymph nodes
that left painful sores
on her neck.
Her mother died young.
And when her father remarried,
her stepmother made clear
from the beginning:
Germaine was not wanted.
She was sent to sleep in the stable.
Fed the scraps.
Given the hardest work тАФ
tending sheep alone
in the fields,
day after day.
If she was caught slipping inside
to warm herself,
she was beaten.
She had no friends.
The village children mocked her.
Even the other servants
kept their distance.
By every human measure тАФ
she was forgotten.
And yet.
Something happened in those fields
that the world could not see.
Germaine prayed.
Not prayers of bitterness.
Not prayers demanding justice.
Prayers of surrender.
Of trust.
Of love.
She stuck her shepherd's crook
in the ground
and left the sheep тАФ
trusting God to keep them safe тАФ
while she walked to daily Mass.
And the sheep were always safe
when she returned.
She shared her small portion of bread
with beggars poorer than herself.
She loved without expectation.
She gave without anything left to give.
And then one June morning in 1601 тАФ
she was found dead in her straw bed.
She was twenty-two years old.
The miracles began immediately.
Children were healed at her grave.
Her body was found incorrupt
decades later.
In 1867 тАФ Pope Pius IX canonised her.
And here is what stayed with me:
The people who called her worthless
were wrong.
The God who never stopped looking
was right.
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
тАФ Psalm 34:18
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
тАФ Matthew 5:3
Prayer
Saint Germaine,
you were overlooked by everyone тАФ
except God.
Help me to trust
that the eyes which matter most
have never stopped watching.
When I feel forgotten,
rejected, or unseen тАФ
remind me that God's gaze
never leaves His beloved.
And help me today
to see the person in my life
who feels the way you did тАФ
and choose to see them.
Amen.
Truth for Today
The world decides worth by what you have.
God decides worth by who you are.
Reflection
Is there someone in your life
who feels forgotten right now?
One small act of noticing
might change everything.
