The issue is not Christians being involved in society. Christians SHOULD stand for truth, morality, justice, and righteousness. Daniel served in Babylon. Joseph served in Egypt. Esther influenced Persia.
The real issue is what happens when religious movements seek GOVERNMENT POWER to enforce religion.
That is where history becomes terrifying.
The founders of America had just watched Europe drenched in blood from state churches, forced religion, persecution, and governments claiming divine authority. That’s WHY the Constitution forbids religious tests and why the First Amendment says Congress cannot establish religion.
Ironically, many modern Christian nationalists deny separation of church and state while promoting ideas the founders specifically feared.
And let’s be honest: much of Christian nationalism today is not really about restoring morality. It is about gaining cultural and political power.
If morality was the true goal, then many of these same leaders would be preaching repentance, humility, self-denial, love for enemies, care for the poor, sexual purity, honesty, and Christlike character with the same intensity they pursue political dominance.
Instead, what often happens?
* Political power gets wrapped in religious language.
* National identity gets blended with Christianity.
* Government becomes the tool to “fix” spiritual problems.
* Dissenters become enemies instead of people to win through love and truth.
That is dangerous.
Jesus never commanded His followers to seize Rome. He changed the world through truth, sacrifice, and the gospel — not through Caesar’s sword.
History shows that when church and state unite:
Rome persecuted.
Medieval Europe persecuted.
State churches persecuted.
Even Protestants persecuted.
Power corrupts religion just as much as it corrupts government.
And Revelation 13 warns of a system where worship and civil power unite together to enforce religious practice.
The greatest threats to liberty rarely arrive looking evil. They usually come promising safety, morality, patriotism, and national restoration.
