HOW DID ADAM AND EVE AND NOAH'S FAMILY POPULATE THE EARTH?

One of the most common objections to the Bible is this: If Adam and Eve were the first humans, who did their children marry? The answer is simple. They married their brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and other close relatives.

The same was true after the Flood. Noah's family was the only family left on earth, so the generations that followed had to marry within the extended family. There simply were no other people.

Many people immediately object because close-relative marriages today can increase the risk of birth defects. But that assumes the genetic conditions we see today existed at the beginning. Scripture teaches the opposite.

Adam and Eve were created directly by God. Their genetic information would have been far closer to perfect than ours is today. Harmful mutations accumulate over generations, and after thousands of years of death, disease, and genetic decline, close-relative marriages became increasingly risky. That is why God later prohibited such unions in the Law of Moses.

The same principle applies after the Flood. Noah's family carried far fewer genetic problems than people today. What seems impossible to modern minds is exactly what we would expect if humanity began recently from a small number of genetically healthy people.

The Bible presents a world that started very good and has been declining ever since. We are not evolving upward. We are experiencing the effects of sin, death, and corruption in a creation that is wearing out. Genesis explains why the world is broken, and the gospel explains how God is restoring what was lost.
