FOCUSING ON GOD ALONE

In a world filled with endless distractions, competing priorities, and constant noise, finding inner peace can feel like an uphill battle. We often divide our attention among our careers, social lives, anxieties, and digital screens, leaving our minds fragmented. However, the Christian faith offers a profound alternative to this chaotic state of mind: focusing on God alone. This is not a call to neglect our daily responsibilities, but rather an invitation to anchor our hearts and minds so deeply in the Creator that everything else finds its proper place.
To focus on God alone means to make Him our ultimate priority and the lens through which we view the world. Jesus spoke directly to this in Matthew 6:33, instructing His followers to "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness." He promised that when we align our focus this way, our practical, everyday needs will be taken care of as well. Matthew 6:33 invites us to trade our anxiety for alignment. When we make seeking God’s heart and kingdom our ultimate daily priority, our perspective shifts. We discover that everything else we truly need is already gathered in His hands. When our attention is divided, we become highly vulnerable to anxiety. By shifting our gaze away from our problems and onto God's character, we swap our worry for a deep, unshakeable peace. As the prophet Isaiah wrote, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You" (Isaiah 26:3). This verse reveals that perfect peace isn't the absence of trouble, but the presence of a focused mind. When we intentionally anchor our thoughts on God’s unchanging character rather than our shifting circumstances, His steady grace silences our deepest anxieties.
Focusing on God also requires a deliberate filtering of the noise around us. The biblical narrative is full of moments where individuals had to look past their immediate, terrifying circumstances to see God's hand at work. A classic example is Peter walking on the water in Matthew 14:29-30. As long as Peter kept his eyes fixed on Jesus, he did the impossible—he walked on top of the stormy waves. But the moment he shifted his focus to the strength of the wind and the size of the waves, fear took over, and he began to sink. This story serves as a powerful metaphor for our modern lives. The "winds and waves" of financial stress, relationship struggles, or global uncertainty will always be there, but sinking only happens when we take our eyes off Christ.
Furthermore, a singular focus on God protects us from the subtle trap of modern idolatry. Idolatry isn't just about bowing down to statues; it is letting anything—money, status, comfort, or even another person—occupy the place in our hearts that belongs only to God. In Psalm 62:5, King David writes, "My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him." David recognized that looking to the world for ultimate fulfillment or rescue always leads to disappointment.
True security is found only when God is our solitary rock and salvation. When everything around us feels like shifting sand, His presence remains steady and unshakeable. Relying on Him means we no longer have to carry the heavy burden of trying to control our own lives; instead, we can rest deeply, knowing that our ultimate well-being is completely safe in His hands.
Ultimately, focusing on God alone is a daily, intentional discipline. It begins in the quiet moments of the morning, continues through the choices we make at work, and rests in evening prayers. By intentionally fixing our eyes on Jesus, who is "the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2), we find the clarity, strength, and peace needed to navigate life's complexities with a steady heart. Hebrews 12:2 calls us to look away from our distractions and fix our eyes and hearts entirely on Jesus. As the author and finisher of our faith, He doesn’t just start our spiritual journey; He faithfully guides us to the very end. By keeping our gaze locked on Him, we find the endurance to push through the hardest parts of life without losing heart. We are reminded that the heavy burdens we carry are not ours to bear alone, because He has already paved the way ahead of us and promises to carry us safely across the finish line. Amen!
