Saint of the Day тАФ 19 June
Saint Romuald
The Man Who Stored His Treasure in Silence
He watched his father
kill a man in a duel.
And in the aftermath
of that violence тАФ
something broke open
inside him.
Romuald was born
around 952 AD
into a wealthy Italian noble family.
He had every earthly treasure
a young man of his era
could want.
Land. Status. Power.
A life of comfort
already arranged for him.
But watching his father's hands
take a life
sent Romuald
into a monastery for forty days
in penance and grief.
And he never fully came back
to the life he had left.
What began as forty days
became a lifetime.
He became a monk.
Then a wandering hermit.
Then a reformer of monasteries
across northern Italy.
He was not a quiet man
who simply disappeared
into a cell.
He was relentless тАФ
constantly challenging communities
that had grown comfortable,
demanding a return
to genuine prayer,
genuine silence,
genuine poverty.
Many resented him.
Some communities drove him out.
He was betrayed by superiors.
He lived through false accusations.
He endured physical illness
for much of his later life.
And yet тАФ
he kept going.
Because the treasure
he was storing
was not approval,
not recognition,
not security.
It was something
that no betrayal,
no false accusation,
no illness
could take from him.
Around 1012,
Romuald founded
what would become
the Camaldolese Order тАФ
a unique expression of monastic life
that combined the hermit's solitude
with the monk's community.
Each monk lived
in his own small cell.
They gathered for prayer.
They dispersed again for silence.
The genius of it was this:
you brought everything
of yourself
into the silence.
Your failures.
Your distractions.
Your loves.
Your unresolved griefs.
And you laid them all
before God.
Romuald died alone in his cell
in 1027 тАФ
exactly as he had chosen to live:
in silence,
before God,
with nothing between himself
and what he had always treasured most.
He was canonised in 1582
by Pope Gregory XIII.
Today's Gospel asks:
where is your treasure?
Romuald answered that question
with his entire life.
Not with a sermon.
Not with an argument.
With eighty years
of choosing silence over status,
God over comfort,
eternity over the passing things
of a noble Italian family.
"One thing I ask of the Lord тАФ
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life."
тАФ Psalm 27:4
"Where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also."
тАФ Matthew 6:21
Prayer
Saint Romuald,
you left everything
to find the one thing
that mattered.
Pray for us тАФ
that we might have
the clarity to see
what we are truly
storing our lives in,
and the courage
to reorder our hearts
toward what is eternal.
Amen.
Truth for Today
The man who stores his treasure in silence
cannot be robbed.
Reflection
Is there a silence in your life
you have been afraid to enter?
What do you think
you might find there?
