Mystical Gardens Tale

The Silent Tree - Part 2

Daniel froze. The whisper had come from the tree. But somehow he knew it had not been the tree who had spoken. The voice had sounded different. Afraid. Weak. Almost desperate.

"Help..." the voice whispered again. Daniel stepped closer.

"Who's there?"

No answer. The garden remained silent. Even the wind seemed afraid to move. Daniel placed his hand against the bark. The tree felt cold. Not winter cold, but lonely cold. As though something precious had been lost.

He slowly walked around the massive trunk, searching for any sign of where the voice had come from. That was when he noticed something strange that caught his eye. Near the roots, hidden beneath a pile of dead leaves, was a small opening.

Daniel knelt beside it. At first he thought it was a hollow knot in the wood. Daniel knelt. The opening was barely large enough for a child to crawl through. Inside was darkness. Two frightened eyes blinked at him. Daniel jumped backward. Something blinked again.

Then a tiny voice spoke. "Please don't leave."

Daniel stared. Curled inside the hollow root was a very small creature unlike anything he had ever seen. She looked almost like a rabbit. Almost. Her fur shimmered with a light of its own. Tiny leaves wrapped around her from the tips of her ears to her small fluffy tail. Vines wrapped gently around her paws. Most surprising of all were the little green wings folded against her back. She looked exhausted.

"What are you?" Daniel asked.

The creature lowered her head. "I'm the guardian."

Daniel blinked. "The guardian?"

She nodded. "Tansy."

Daniel glanced up at the giant leafless tree. Then back at the tiny creature. "Are you the one who called for help?"

Tears filled her eyes. "I didn't know what else to do."

Daniel sat beside the root. "What happened here?"

Tansy looked toward the silent tree. For a long moment she said nothing. When she finally spoke, her voice trembled.

"Someone tried to steal the tree."

Daniel felt a chill run down his spine. "The tree? How? What? Who?"

"They said if they could get the seed at the base of the trunk, they wouldn't have to move the tree. It's called the Heart Seed."

Daniel frowned. "The seed is still there even after the tree and the garden grew from it? I've never heard of that."

"Most humans haven't." Tansy's wings drooped. "The Heart Seed lives beneath every great tree. It's where the garden's life begins. The streams, flowers, creatures, and paths all grow from it and draw strength from it."

Daniel looked around. Suddenly everything made sense. The brown grass. The wilted flowers. The silent stream. The missing leaves. Without the Heart Seed, the garden was dying.

"Who took it?" Daniel asked.

Tansy shook her head. "I don't know."

"When did this happen?"

"Three nights ago." Tears ran down her cheeks.

Daniel stood and looked toward the distant edge of the garden. The trees there seemed darker somehow. As if shadows lingered between them. Then he noticed something in the dirt. A trail. Deep marks pressed into the earth. Not footprints.

Daniel looked back at Tansy. "I think whoever took it left a trail."

Hope flickered in her eyes for the first time. "You'll help us?"

Daniel looked at the dying garden. Then at the silent tree. Then toward the dark woods beyond. He swallowed hard. He had wanted an adventure. Now he had one.

"Yes, I'll help." He gave her a small smile.

Far away, deep within the dark forest, something moved. And for the briefest moment, a faint green glow pulsed between the trees. A loud crack sounded and it vibrated throughout the garden.
