Oregon has withdrawn a nearly $90,000 penalty against Christian counselor Frank Canepa after he declined to personally affirm a client’s same-sex relationship during a counseling session.
The state licensing board had ordered Canepa to complete additional training and pay $89,636 in costs, claiming he violated professional ethics. Canepa challenged the punishment, arguing that the government cannot force licensed counselors to speak against their religious convictions.
The board has now ended the disciplinary case following a major U.S. Supreme Court ruling protecting counselors from government-compelled speech in private therapy conversations.
Alliance Defending Freedom said licensing authorities must not be allowed to punish professionals simply because their beliefs differ from the state’s preferred ideology. The case raises a growing question across America: Can Christians remain faithful to biblical truth without risking their careers, licenses, and livelihoods?
