Matthew begins his Gospel with a genealogy. At first glance, it looks like a list of names to skip. But look closer: this is the family line of Jesus. It’s filled with patriarchs, kings, exiles, and sinners. There’s Abraham the friend of God, and David the king. But there’s also Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Manasseh — stories marked by scandal, failure, and pain. Yet God wove all of it into His redemptive plan. Three truths from Christ’s family tree: One, God uses imperfect people. The line of Jesus is not a hall of saints. It’s a record of grace. If God could work through their brokenness, He can work through yours. Two, God keeps His promises. For 14 + 14 + 14 generations, the Lord was moving history toward Bethlehem (verse 17). Delay is not denial. His Word never fails. Three, God writes new beginnings. The genealogy ends not with another “begat,” but with “of whom was born Jesus.” The cycle of sin stopped at Christ. Calvary means your past doesn’t define your future. Do you feel disqualified by your family history, your mistakes, or your shame? Look at Jesus’ line again. God doesn’t hide the broken branches — He redeems them. If He could bring the Savior through that family, He can bring something beautiful through your life too.
