Seeking God Before Making Decisions

Scripture

Joshua 9:14 (NKJV)
Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions but they did not ask counsel of the Lord.

When Wisdom Is Needed Before Agreement

Joshua chapter 9 records a subtle but serious mistake. After multiple victories, Israel encounters the Gibeonites, who use deception to appear harmless and distant. Israel examines the evidence, listens to their words, and makes a covenant with them. Everything looks reasonable on the surface. Yet one critical step is missing. They did not seek counsel from the Lord.

This chapter teaches that spiritual success does not eliminate the need for spiritual dependence. Israel had seen miracles, victories, and God’s faithfulness, but they relied on their own judgment instead of prayer. The result was a binding agreement that could not be undone.

God still honored Israel’s integrity, but the consequences of not seeking Him remained. This shows us that even good intentions and logical decisions can lead to long-term complications when God is not consulted first.

For believers today, Joshua 9 is a strong reminder that discernment comes from prayer, not appearances. Decisions involving relationships, commitments, and direction must begin with seeking God. Victory in one season does not replace dependence in the next. Wisdom flows from asking the Lord before acting.

Reflection Questions

1. Do I seek God’s counsel before making important decisions

2. Have I relied on logic or appearances instead of prayer

3. What decision in my life right now needs to be brought before the Lord

Prayer

Lord God, forgive me for the times I have moved forward without seeking You first. Teach me to pause, pray, and ask for Your wisdom before making decisions. Guard my heart from self reliance and lead me in discernment and truth. In Jesus name, Amen.
