UNDERSTANDING GOD’S WORD: ONE VERSE AT A TIME

John 10:27–28 (ESV)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

Historical Context

Jesus spoke these words during a discussion with the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem. Using the familiar picture of a shepherd and his sheep, Jesus explained the relationship between Himself and those who truly belong to Him. In a land where shepherds personally knew and cared for their sheep, this illustration would have been immediately understood by His listeners.

Meaning

Jesus describes three characteristics of His true followers. First, His sheep hear His voice. This means they listen to and receive His Word. Second, Jesus knows them personally. This is not merely awareness of their existence but a loving, saving relationship. Third, His sheep follow Him in faith and obedience.

Jesus then gives one of the greatest promises in Scripture: “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.” Eternal life is not earned by believers; it is a gift from Christ. Furthermore, Jesus promises complete security for His people. No person, power, or circumstance can remove a true believer from His saving hand.

Application

Believers often face doubts, fears, and trials. Our confidence does not rest in our ability to hold on to Christ but in Christ’s ability to hold on to us. The same Savior who calls His sheep is the Savior who keeps His sheep.

Key Truth

Christ not only saves His people; He keeps them secure forever.

Scripture Interprets Scripture

“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” — John 6:37 (ESV)

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” — Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” — John 10:28 (ESV)

Remember

Your salvation is not secured by the strength of your grip on Christ, but by the strength of His grip on you.
