The Weight of Glory vs The Weight of Now
Romans 8:18
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
1. Background: Who, Where, Why
Author & Audience: Paul wrote Romans around AD 57 from Corinth. The church in Rome was mixed — Jews + Gentiles. Many were poor, slaves, or facing Nero’s growing hostility.
Romans 8 sits right after Romans 7 where Paul talks about the struggle with sin. Romans 8:18-39 is Paul’s “hope chapter.” The Roman Christians were being mocked, losing jobs, and some would soon face persecution under Nero.
Key word “sufferings”pathemata in Greek. Paul wasn’t theorizing. He’d been beaten 5 times, shipwrecked 3 times, imprisoned, stoned, and left for dead. 2 Corinthians 11:23-27. He wrote this from experience.
Key word “glory”doxa -In the OT, God’s glory filled the tabernacle. Paul says that same weighty, beautiful presence of God will one day fill you body, soul, and spirit.
2. Sermon Points
Point 1: Acknowledge the Weight of “Present Sufferings”
Paul doesn’t spiritualize pain away. Present” -nun — right now, real time.
Like the Roman believers, we know what it is: medical bills, job loss, betrayal, grief, anxiety.
God doesn’t say “stop feeling it.” He says “bring it to Me.” Psalm 34:18
Illustration: A woman in labour feels every contraction. To tell her “it’s not real” helps no one. But the midwife says, “This pain has purpose. A baby is coming.”
Point 2: Use Heaven’s Scale to Measure*
“Not worth comparing” Paul uses accounting language. He puts your worst day on one scale, and God’s glory on the other. It doesn’t even tip.
Why? Because “present” sufferings are time limited. “Glory to be revealed” is eternity weighted. 2 Cor 4:17-18
This is the same perspective Joseph had in Genesis 50:20, and Job had in Job 42:5.
Point 3: The Glory is “Revealed IN Us”
Not just to us, but in us.
Romans 8:29-30 says God is predestining us to be conformed to Christ’s image.
Your trials are God’s cocoon. What looks like crushing is actually transformation.
One day your body, mind, and relationships will be fully healed. Revelation 21:4. No more tears, pain, or goodbyes.
3. Application for Us Today
1. For the weary parent: That 3am season won’t last forever. God is revealing patience + Christlike love in you.
2. For the unemployed: The pit is not your identity. Like Joseph, God is preparing you for a palace.
3. For the sick: Your body may fail, but God’s glory will one day make it incorruptible. 1 Cor 15:42
Challenge: Stop asking “God, why is this happening?” and start asking “God, what glory are You revealing in me through this?
4. Closing & Call
Romans 8:18 is not “grin and bear it” theology. It’s “look up and hold on” theology.
The cross looked like defeat on Friday, but glory on Sunday. Your Friday has a Sunday coming.
Prayer of Commitment:
“Lord Jesus, thank You that You don’t waste my pain. When I can’t see the glory, help me trust the Gardener. Make me patient in the cocoon, knowing You are making me into something beautiful. Amen.”
Take-home:
“Today’s weight is real. But tomorrow’s glory is heavier.”
