A Nugget of Truth.
Many Christians assume that the "law of sin and death" in Romans 8:2 refers to the Ten Commandments. However, when Paul's words are read in context, he defines the phrase very differently.

In Romans 7:22-23 Paul describes two laws at work:

"For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members... bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."

Notice the distinction. Paul delights in the law of God, but he is brought into captivity by the law of sin. The law of sin and the law of God are not the same thing. One is loved by the renewed mind; the other enslaves the sinner.

Paul even describes God's law as "holy, and just, and good" (Romans 7:12). The problem is not God's law, but the sinful nature that wars against it.

This is why Romans 8:2 says:

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."

Christ does not free us from God's holy law. He frees us from the law of sin in our members—the sinful principle of fallen human nature that brings us into captivity and ultimately produces death.

The law of God reveals sin. The law of sin produces it.

When Paul speaks of the "law of sin and death," he is not referring to the Ten Commandments, but to the power of sin working within fallen humanity.
