“Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God—my God—will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you….” 1 Chronicles 28:20
As a child, I moved a lot with my family since my father was in the Russian military. We lived on the Kamchatka Peninsula, as well as in Central Asia and Siberia. Early on, I acquired a feeling and an understanding of the vastness of the world. I had everything—money, beauty, and abilities—and I was a very active girl and leader.
There was a desert right outside the fence of the military town where we lived when I was 13 years old, and that’s where I most clearly felt the solemn immensity of the God who created it. I felt a tremendous need to go out into the desert for two or three hours to get away from the hustle and bustle and reflect on my life; however, a lot of time passed before I consciously turned to the Master of this big world.
I had many boyfriends when I grew up, and I even had a baby girl with one of them. As a result, I led a rather rebellious lifestyle. But this didn’t bring me happiness, since I was looking for the ideal husband. My daughter needed a father, so I made many acquaintances; but not finding what I was looking for, I’d break their hearts and move on to another.
Once, on the way to meet a friend, I was in despair because I knew we would be parting, and I didn’t want to cry. “God, if You can hear me, please help me not to cry during our conversation,” I begged. He didn’t just hear me; He answered me by saying, I’m here. You won’t cry, followed by the most amazing peace of mind.
I was so glad to discover God’s benevolent presence was right there with me that day, and I suddenly realized that He’d never left. He was the one who had given me peace in that desert so many years ago. God, you are here with me! You can hear me! I want to get to know You more, I thought over and over on my way home.
It wasn’t long before the Lord allowed me to study the Bible with some people, and it was easy for me to understand and accept what I was learning. Sadly, I couldn’t say that for most of my friends because all they were doing was waiting for me to come back to them.
They firmly believed that I would return to my old way of life. But I didn’t go back, and later, I was baptized. Then, three years later, God brought the ideal man into my life, and we married. God knew just who I needed, and he has become an excellent father to my daughter.
