CHINESE TREASURE SHIPS
One of the most common objections to the Bible is that a wooden vessel the size described in Book of Genesis could not have been built. They argue it would twist, sag, and break apart, and insist that ancient people simply did not have the knowledge or engineering ability to construct something so massive.
But that claim does not hold up under scrutiny.
The Ark was described as approximately 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Critics often say ships of that size were not possible until modern times. Yet history tells a very different story. Ancient civilizations were building enormous wooden vessels long before modern shipbuilding techniques existed.
Consider the massive warship built in ancient Egypt under Ptolemy Philopator. Or look to 15th-century China, where the fleets of Zheng He sailed the oceans with ships that rivaled the size of the Ark. Historical records describe these “Treasure Ships” as reaching lengths between 400 and 450 feet, placing them right in the same range as Noah’s Ark.
These were not simple rafts. They were complex, ocean-going vessels. Some carried up to 28,000 people across long distances, traveling throughout Southeast Asia, India, and even reaching the coast of Africa. They had multiple masts, advanced sail systems, and were built strong enough to handle the stress of wind, waves, and long voyages. In fact, the very presence of large masts and sails would have required even greater structural strength than a vessel like the Ark, which was designed primarily for stability, not speed.
Archaeological discoveries support this. In 1957, an 11-meter-long tiller was uncovered at a Chinese shipyard where these massive vessels were constructed. This is not theory. This is physical evidence of large-scale shipbuilding in the ancient world.
So the idea that ancient people were incapable of building a vessel like the Ark is not based on evidence. It is based on assumption.
And this pattern shows up again and again. Skeptics often underestimate ancient intelligence and capability. Yet history reveals advanced engineering across the globe. Massive pyramids in Egypt and South America, intricate mechanical devices like the Antikythera mechanism, and even early forms of battery technology demonstrate that ancient people were not primitive. They were highly intelligent, innovative, and capable.
The Ark, as described in Scripture, was not a sailing warship. It did not need to cut through waves at high speed or carry towering sails. It was designed as a stable, floating structure built to preserve life through a catastrophic event. Its proportions are actually ideal for stability in rough waters, more like a massive barge than a modern ship.
When you compare that design to what we know from history, the objection begins to fall apart.
The real issue is not whether the Ark could be built.
The real issue is whether we are willing to accept what the evidence and history already show. Ancient people had the ability to create. The engineering was there. The scale was achievable.
And in the end we must remember it had the best Engineer to make sure it was done right, God.
