Daily Bible Lesson.
WHAT WAS REALLY NAILED TO THE CROSS?

Not God’s Ten Commandments, but the Shadows That Met Their Fulfillment in Christ.

Many say, “The law was nailed to the cross.”
But the solemn question is: Which law?

Was it the holy law that defines sin?
Was it the commandments God spoke with His own voice?
Was it the law Christ came to magnify?
Was it the standard by which all men will be judged?

Never.

If God’s Ten Commandments were nailed to the cross, then sin has no definition, repentance has no foundation, judgment has no standard, and Calvary has no necessity.

But the Word of God declares:

“Sin is the transgression of the law.” — 1 John 3:4
“The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” — Romans 7:12
“Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.” — Romans 3:31

The cross did not destroy God’s moral law.
The cross revealed its holiness.
The cross showed sin’s true penalty.
The cross destroyed every excuse for rebellion.

What ended at Calvary were the ceremonial shadows—the sacrifices, ordinances, priesthood, feast sabbaths, washings, and sanctuary rites that pointed forward to Christ.

“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances… nailing it to His cross.” — Colossians 2:14
“The law having a shadow of good things to come.” — Hebrews 10:1

“The ceremonial law was given by Christ… This law, of course, we are not now to observe; for Christ by His death abolished it.” — Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 365

1. THE SACRIFICES ENDED—BECAUSE THE TRUE LAMB HAD COME

The lambs, goats, bulls, burnt offerings, sin offerings, and daily sacrifices all pointed to one bleeding Substitute—Jesus Christ.

For centuries, every altar cried:
A better Sacrifice is coming.
A spotless Lamb is coming.
The blood of Christ is coming.

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” — John 1:29
“We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” — Hebrews 10:10
“He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.” — Daniel 9:27

“Type had met antitype in the death of God’s Son.” — The Desire of Ages, p. 757

The lambs died until the Lamb of God died. When Christ cried, “It is finished,” the blood of beasts could no longer point forward—because the blood of the Son of God had been shed.

2. THE EARTHLY SANCTUARY SERVICE ENDED—BECAUSE CHRIST ENTERED THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY

The altar, incense, offerings, priestly rites, temple ceremonies, and earthly sanctuary services were shadows of a greater ministry.

When Jesus died, the veil was torn from top to bottom—not by human hands, but by the hand of God.

“The veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.” — Matthew 27:51
“By His own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” — Hebrews 9:12
“We have such an High Priest… in the heavens.” — Hebrews 8:1

“The rending of the veil of the temple showed that the Jewish sacrifices and ordinances would no longer be received.” — Early Writings, p. 253

The earthly veil was torn because the way to the heavenly sanctuary was opened. The shadow ceased because the living High Priest had entered His true ministry above.

3. THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD ENDED—BECAUSE CHRIST IS OUR ONLY MEDIATOR

The priesthood of Aaron was temporary.
The priesthood of Christ is eternal.

Earthly priests died and were replaced.
Christ ever liveth to make intercession.

“The priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.” — Hebrews 7:12
“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5
“He ever liveth to make intercession.” — Hebrews 7:25

No earthly priest now stands between the sinner and God. Christ alone bears the wounds. Christ alone presents the blood. Christ alone is the sinner’s Mediator.

4 THE FEASTS AND CEREMONIAL SABBATHS ENDED—BECAUSE THE SHADOW MET THE SAVIOUR

Passover, Firstfruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Tabernacles, and their yearly ceremonial sabbaths were prophetic shadows of Christ’s redemptive work.

“Let no man therefore judge you… in respect of an holyday… or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” — Colossians 2:16–17
“Beside the sabbaths of the LORD.” — Leviticus 23:38

The ceremonial sabbaths pointed forward to redemption.
The weekly Sabbath points back to Creation.

The feast sabbaths were shadows.
The seventh-day Sabbath is God’s memorial.

“The seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God.” — Exodus 20:10
“The Sabbath was made for man.” — Mark 2:27

The yearly ceremonial sabbaths ended at the cross. But The Weekly Sabbath remains in the heart of God’s moral law, because Creation was not nailed to Calvary.

5. THE RITUAL ORDINANCES ENDED—BECAUSE CHRIST CLEANSES THE CONSCIENCE

Meat offerings, drink offerings, divers washings, purification rites, circumcision as a covenant requirement, and carnal ordinances belonged to the temporary ceremonial system.

They could touch the body, but they could not cleanse the heart.

“Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.” — Hebrews 9:10
“How much more shall the blood of Christ… purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” — Hebrews 9:14
“Circumcision is nothing… but the keeping of the commandments of God.” — 1 Corinthians 7:19

The outward symbols ended because Christ offers inward cleansing. The knife of circumcision gave way to the sword of the Spirit. The washings of the flesh gave way to the blood that purges the conscience.

6. THE OLD COVENANT CEREMONIAL SYSTEM ENDED—BUT GOD’S LAW WAS WRITTEN IN THE HEART

The old covenant ceremonial system passed away, but the new covenant does not erase God’s law. It writes it in the surrendered soul.

“He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second.” — Hebrews 10:9
“I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.” — Hebrews 8:10
“This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.” — 1 John 5:3

Grace does not cancel obedience. Grace creates obedience.
Grace does not protect rebellion. Grace crucifies rebellion.
Grace does not erase the law. Grace writes the law where sin once ruled.

WHAT WAS NOT NAILED TO THE CROSS? GOD’S TEN COMMANDMENTS

God’s Ten Commandments were not shadows.
They were not ceremonies.
They were not temporary ordinances.
They were not Jewish rituals.

They are the transcript of God’s character, the definition of sin, the standard of judgment, and the law Christ came to magnify.

“Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law.” — Matthew 5:18
“If ye love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15
“So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.” — James 2:12
“Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” — Revelation 14:12

“The law of God, from its very nature, is unchangeable.” — Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 49

“The law of God is as sacred as Himself. It is a revelation of His will, a transcript of His character.” — Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 52

If the Ten Commandments were nailed to the cross, then the final remnant would have no commandments to keep. But Revelation says God’s last people keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.

BELOVED, DO NOT CONFUSE THE SHADOW WITH THE STANDARD

The ceremonial law pointed to Christ’s death.
The moral law reveals why Christ had to die.

The shadows ended when Christ fulfilled them.
The Ten Commandments stand because God’s character stands.

The cross did not abolish obedience.
The cross condemned sin.
The cross magnified the law.
The cross opened the way for Christ to write His commandments in the heart.

“Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life.” — Revelation 22:14

NAILED TO THE CROSS:
Sacrifices. Ordinances. Feast shadows. Ritual washings. Levitical priesthood. Earthly sanctuary rites. Circumcision as a covenant requirement. The Jewish ceremonial system.

NOT NAILED TO THE CROSS:
God’s eternal moral law—the Ten Commandments.

The cross did not destroy God’s law—it exposed sin, silenced the shadows, fulfilled the sacrifices, opened the heavenly sanctuary, and revealed the infinite price Heaven paid to save sinners from sin.
