Understanding God’s Word: One Verse at a Time
John 6:44
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.” (ESV)
Historical Context
Jesus spoke these words during His “Bread of Life” discourse in Galilee after feeding the five thousand. Many followed Him because of His miracles, but Jesus explained that true faith is the work of God.
What Does This Verse Mean?
Jesus teaches that because of sin, no person can come to Him by his own ability. Salvation begins with God’s gracious initiative. The Father draws sinners to His Son, opening their hearts to believe the Gospel.
Jesus also gives a wonderful promise: everyone whom the Father draws to Christ will be raised up on the last day. The God who begins the work of salvation will bring it to completion.
Key Truth
Salvation is not the result of human effort but the gracious work of God from beginning to end.
Scripture Interprets Scripture
John 6:37 – “All that the Father gives me will come to me.”
Ephesians 2:1 – “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.”
Remember
If you have come to Jesus Christ in true faith, it is because God first worked in your heart and drew you to His Son. Therefore, all glory belongs to God alone.
Soli Deo Gloria — To God Alone Be the Glory.
Opening the Scriptures. Proclaiming Christ. Equipping His Church.
