Taming the Tongue.

There’s an old expression, “Bite your tongue,” that you hear quite frequently, which simply means “Stop talking! Don’t say what you were going to say,” because once words leave your mouth, you can’t take them back… the damage is already done! Words spoken in anger are rarely what you would want to say if you had time to cool down and think about it. And bitter words can cut the heart like a knife. God’s Word identifies just how evil the tongue is in James 3:6: “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” The Bible also recognizes the difficulty of controlling what you say in James 3:8: “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” In other words, it’s humanly impossible to control every word you speak; only God can do that. The Bible says in Luke 1:37, “For with God nothing will be impossible.” That’s why it’s so important to turn your life over to Him and let Jesus take over! When you are guided by the Holy Spirit, there will be no angry words spewing from your mouth, only words of gentleness and kindness. You won’t be tempted to gossip, speak harshly about your enemies, or yell at someone who has done you wrong. God will replace all those words and feelings of hatred with His spirit of forgiveness and words of wisdom. Ask God today to tame your tongue and allow Jesus to truly shine in you! Text: Psalm 34:13, Psalm 52:2, Job 5:21, Job 6:24, Psalm 19:14
