LORD OF THE SABBATH
KEY VERSE:``` "For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day" (MATTHEW 12:8).
The Pharisees watched Jesus closely. His disciples were hungry, so they plucked grain on the Sabbath. To the religious, it was work. To Jesus, it was mercy. He reminded them that David ate the showbread when he was hungry, and priests work on the Sabbath and are blameless. Then He made it plain: βI desire mercy, and not sacrifice.β Rules without love crush people. Calvary shows us a Savior who chose mercy over ritual, people over tradition.
Three truths from the Lord of the Sabbath: One, Jesus is greater than our rules. βBut I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.β The Pharisees defended the Sabbath but missed the Lord of the Sabbath standing in front of them. Religion protects systems; Jesus rescues people. Two, Jesus defines true rest. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Rest is not found in a day, but in a Person. At the Cross, He finished the work so we could enter His rest. Three, Jesus chooses mercy. βIf ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.β He would rather feed the hungry than defend a tradition. He would rather heal on Sabbath than let a man stay broken.
Are you bound by rules that have no mercy? Tired of religion that watches but never helps? Come to the Lord of the Sabbath today. He is not asking for perfect performance; He is offering perfect rest. Where the law condemns, His mercy sets free. Where tradition burdens, His grace lifts. Let Him be Lord over your week, your work, and your wounds.
