TIS’ SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS

Louisa Stead

It was 1890 when the Stead family went to the beach off the coast of New Jersey for a vacation (Robert and Louisa and their daughter Lily).

In the water, Robert noticed a man struggling. He didn’t know anything about lifeguard work, but he went out to try and save that man. The drowning man caught Robert in a death clench out in the water, and both of them drowned.

His wife left as a widow with a small little girl to raise. Louisa did her best, but in 1890 there was no welfare, no aid for children.

One day she said to her young daughter, Lily, “When we go to bed tonight, we need to pray for food because when we wake up there’s nothing left for breakfast.” As she was praying, she looked down at the floor by the bed and saw Lily’s little worn out shoes, and she said, ”Lily, when you pray, pray also that Jesus will provide enough money to buy you a new pair of shoes.”

The next morning she got up and went to the door to try to open it, and something was blocking the door. It was a box left on her doorstep full of groceries. And in that box, there was an envelope with a $10 bill in it, more than enough to buy Lily some shoes.

After she thank God for His provision they ate breakfast, and she took out a pen, and began to write these words:
”Tis’ so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take him at his word.
Just to rest upon his promise,
Just to know, Thus Saith the Lord”

After breakfast, they went to town and bought a pair of shoes for Lily. She sat down in her yard as she watched her daughter play in a brand new pair of shoes, and took out her pen again and wrote these words:
“I’m glad I’ve learned to trust him,
Precious Jesus, Saviour, Friend.
And I know that thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.”

“Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him.
How I’ve proved him ore and ore.
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus.
Oh, for grace to trust him more .”
