Let's talk about it.
Matthew 5:6's Sermon
Scripture: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” — Matthew
Jesus used two of the strongest human desires—hunger and thirst—to describe what our hearts should long for most. Hunger and thirst are not casual wishes. They are deep needs. When a person is truly hungry, food becomes their focus. When they are truly thirsty, water becomes their priority. In the same way, Christ teaches that a blessed life is found when we passionately desire God’s righteousness above everything else.
The world tells us to hunger for success, wealth, recognition, pleasure, and power. Yet none of these things can fully satisfy the soul. People often spend years pursuing what they believe will bring fulfillment, only to discover an emptiness remains. The human heart was created for God, and only He can satisfy its deepest longings.
Righteousness means seeking God’s will, God’s character, and God’s ways. It means desiring a closer relationship with Him, wanting our thoughts, words, and actions to reflect His truth. It is a hunger to know Christ more deeply and to become more like Him each day.
The images of the weary traveler, the refreshing spring, the crowd listening to Jesus, the abundant feast, and the multitudes entering a flourishing land all point to the same truth: God never ignores a heart that sincerely seeks Him. Those who come to Him thirsty will find living water. Those who come hungry will find the Bread of Life. Those who seek righteousness will discover that God fills them with His presence, peace, strength, wisdom, and joy.
Notice that Jesus does not merely promise a small taste of satisfaction. He says they shall be filled. God’s provision is abundant. He does not leave His children spiritually starving. He satisfies them through His Word, His Spirit, His grace, and ultimately through eternal fellowship with Him.
If your heart feels empty today, let that emptiness drive you toward Christ. If you are weary from the desert of this world, keep walking toward His light. The same Savior who fed multitudes, healed the broken, and offered living water to the thirsty still satisfies souls today.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness—not because they are already perfect, but because they know only God can truly satisfy their deepest need.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your promise that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled. I confess that too often I chase things that cannot truly satisfy omy soul. Forgive me when I seek fulfillment in the temporary things of this world instead of seeking You first.
Create within me a deeper hunger for Your presence and a greater thirst for Your truth. Help me desire Your Word more than earthly pleasures, and seek Your will above my own. Draw me closer to Jesus each day and shape my heart to reflect His love, humility, holiness, and compassion.
Lord, for those who feel weary, empty, discouraged, or spiritually dry, pour out Your living water upon them. Refresh their spirits. Renew their strength. Restore their hope. Remind them that You see their struggles and that Your promises never fail.
Fill me with Your peace when I am anxious, Your strength when I am weak, Your wisdom when I am uncertain, and Your joy when I am discouraged. Let my life become a testimony of Your goodness and grace.
May I continually walk toward Your light, trusting that You alone can satisfy the deepest needs of my heart. And one day, bring me into the fullness of Your eternal kingdom where every longing will be completely fulfilled in Your presence.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ we pray,
Amen.
