COMING WITH THE CLOUDS
Revelation 1:7 gives us a unique promise of Christ’s return,
“Behold, he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him, and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen.”
There are three points here we want to bring out. First, Christ returns with CLOUDS. Matthew 24:30 tells us all earth will mourn when Christ comes in the clouds of GLORY. See also Matthew 25:31-48. In Daniel 7:13 Jesus was brought before His Father in “clouds of heaven” “and they brought Him near before Him”. We believe this refers to clouds of angels.
The Bible says He comes with His angels, Matthew 16:27, with the glory of His Father. Jude verse 17 says He comes with ten thousand of His saints, which simply means the “holy ones”. There will be a divine retinue of angels who return with Christ. That will not only be a glorious display of power and majesty, but they come with a practical purpose, to protect, rescue, and to gather God's people.
We are caught up with Christ in the clouds and meet Him in the air. We go with Him to heaven for a thousand years, see Revelation 20:6, John 14:1-4. There will be a judgement of the wicked during that time, Revelation 20:4.
In Acts 1 we saw Jesus ascend to heaven and angels received Him out of the sight of the disciples. But two angels remained and gave the disciples the assurance in verse 11, “This same Jesus will come in like manner as you have seen Him go."
The second point is, EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM. Christ isn’t coming secretly. Matthew 24 warns us not to go when someone says he is in the “secret chambers”, verse 26. Jesus says His return will be “as the lightning cometh out of the east and shines to the west”, verse 27. Lightning is pretty dramatic.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 says He comes with a SHOUT, THE TRUMP OF GOD, and the VOICE OF THE ARCHANGEL. That wakes up the dead!
1 Thessalonians 5:2-4 tells us when men are crying peace and safety, sudden destruction comes upon them.
2 Peter 3:10 tells us the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night and the heavens will pass away ‘WITH GREAT NOISE”. The earth will be on fire and the elements will melt with the intense heat.
The last point to take away from the verse is that there will be a special resurrection of those responsible for putting Christ to death. This not only means Caiphas, but also the soldiers who struck Him, the one who thrust a spear in Christ’s side, and those who mocked Him. Jesus told Caiphas he would see Him return in power and glory, Matthew 26:64.
As Daniel 12:2 puts it, some will awaken to SHAME and everlasting contempt.
You, brothers and sisters, if you have an intimate knowledge of Christ and walk with Him daily, have the promise of everlasting life, shining as the stars forever, Daniel 12:3 tells us. Amen!
