Good morning God

Jesus spoke highly of John the Baptist, saying, “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11). Why did Jesus give John such remarkable praise?

John the Baptist stands at the turning point of God’s redemptive plan. He is often regarded as the last prophet of the Old Testament era and the first prophet announcing the fulfillment of the New Testament. While all the prophets before him foretold the coming of the Messiah, John not only proclaimed His arrival but also became an eyewitness to Him. John testified, “I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John 1:33–34). He witnessed the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus, confirming His divine identity as the Son of God and the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

John’s own life was a testimony to God’s grace. He was born miraculously to elderly parents according to God’s promise and was filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb. He lived as a humble servant who consistently directed people’s attention to Christ rather than to himself. His words reveal his humility: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

Yet Jesus also declared, “The one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” This does not diminish John’s greatness. Rather, it highlights the greater privilege of New Testament believers, who live after Christ’s death and resurrection. We have witnessed the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption, received the indwelling Holy Spirit, and have a fuller revelation of God’s kingdom through Jesus Christ.
