The Pharisees came to Jesus upset about unwashed hands. They had traditions that looked holy but hearts that were far from God. Jesus answered with a hard truth: it’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the heart. Evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, thefts — these begin inside. Religion washes hands. Calvary washes hearts. Three truths about the heart from Jesus: One, tradition can’t cleanse you. “Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition” (verse 6). Outward rules without inward change produce hypocrites, not disciples. Two, worship starts in the heart. “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me” (verse 8). God is not impressed with performance when the heart is absent. Three, only Jesus goes deep enough. “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart.” The problem is not your hands. The problem is your heart. And the Cross is God’s answer to a defiled heart. Are you more concerned with how you look than how you are? Do you honor God with your Sunday and ignore Him on Monday? Don’t wash your hands and miss your heart. Bring it to Jesus today. At Calvary, He didn’t give us new rules — He gave us a new heart.
