THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8:12
When Jesus said, "I am the light of the world," the people understood the weight of His words. By using the phrase "I am," He was intentionally using the divine name of God from the Old Testament. To the people gathered there, light pointed back to the pillar of fire that guided their ancestors through the wilderness and the light from the beginning of creation. Jesus was proclaiming Himself as the ultimate source of truth and the visible presence of God among them.
Walking in darkness represents living in sin, spiritual death, and a lack of direction. Without Him, we lack the moral clarity to navigate the difficulties of life. However, Jesus promises that those who follow Him will never be left to stumble. Much like the Psalmist describes the Word as a lamp to our feet, Jesus is the light. His "light of life" does more than just show us which way to go. It empowers us to live. His light also serves to expose the things we often try to hide in the dark, such as our shame, regrets, and past sins. Jesus does not bring these things into the light to embarrass or condemn us, but to heal us. When we allow His light to reveal our hidden burdens, we can finally be renewed and set free. He brings everything into the open so that we no longer have to carry the weight.
Following Him means we can have clarity in a dark world filled with conflicting opinions. We may not always see the entire path from beginning to end, but He is faithful to illuminate the very next step we need to take. As we align our thoughts and decisions with His teachings, His light will always point us toward what is true.
God bless you!
