Daily Bible Lesson.
JUSTIFIED BY CHRIST ALONE

“Take away the filthy garments from him... Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” — Zechariah 3:4

What is Justification by Faith?

Many believe it is simply God overlooking sin, excusing wrongdoing, or pretending that guilt does not exist. But the Bible reveals something infinitely more glorious and powerful.

In Zechariah chapter 3, Joshua the high priest stands before God clothed in filthy garments. These garments represent the stains of sin, guilt, and human helplessness. Notice that Joshua does not cleanse himself. He does not improve himself. He does not earn favor with God through his own efforts. He simply stands before Heaven completely unable to save himself.

Then God speaks.
“Take away the filthy garments from him.”
What a beautiful picture of the gospel! God does for man what man can never do for himself.
Ellen White explains:

"What is justification by faith?—It is the work of God in laying the glory of man in the dust, and doing for man that which it is not in his power to do for himself."

The greatest obstacle to salvation is not our weakness—it is our confidence in ourselves. As long as we trust in our own goodness, our own works, our own righteousness, we cannot fully receive the righteousness of Christ. But when we see our true condition, when human pride is humbled, when self is laid in the dust, Christ is able to clothe us with His perfect righteousness.

Justification by faith is not merely forgiveness; it is a divine exchange.

Our guilt for His righteousness.

Our filthy garments for His spotless robe.

Our condemnation for His acceptance.

Our helplessness for His saving power.

The sinner comes empty-handed and Christ supplies everything. The sinner comes guilty and Christ declares him forgiven. The sinner comes unworthy and Christ covers him with His own perfect righteousness.

Heaven's message is not "Make yourself clean and then come."

Heaven's message is "Come as you are, and I will make you clean."

The moment we stop trusting ourselves and place our faith entirely in Jesus Christ, God declares:
"Take away the filthy garments from him."
What a Savior! What amazing grace! What infinite love! Let us praise God daily for a righteousness we could never earn and a salvation we could never achieve by our own strength.

By beholding Christ, we are changed. By trusting Christ, we are justified. By abiding in Christ, we are transformed.

Justification by faith is Heaven doing for us what we could never do for ourselves.
