Never Fear.

“And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’ And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’ And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly You are the Son of God.’” Matthew 14:29–33

In 1998, my father was serving as a pastor in the Russian city of Vyatskiye Polyany, on the banks of the beautiful Vyatka River in the Kirov region. A pastor’s work was a lifetime of ministry in one city, but they would visit all the small towns and villages in the surrounding area, conducting evangelistic programs and organizing small groups of believers.

Not far away was the village of Krasnaya Polyana, and at that time, people were very eager to hear the Word of God and actively attended the evangelistic meetings we held in their towns. My father did the preaching, and I was responsible for the music, microphones, projection equipment, and technical support. But the village was on the opposite bank of the river, and the only way across was a car ferry that ran twice a day at 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Since people worked until 5:00 p.m., our program would start at 6:00 and last for two hours. However, after the meeting was over, the people were so hungry for the Word of God that they would stay and talk into the night! In fact, we would not be ready to cross the river until 10:00 or 11:00 o’clock at night—long after the ferry had gone. So we negotiated with a fisherman who took us back and forth those 30 days.

Since we didn’t have cell phones at the time, we would take out a large flashlight when we got to the river, cup our hands around our mouths, and shout the fisherman’s name, “Vasilli!” blinking the flashlight several times. A few seconds later, we’d hear the sound of his boat engine in the distance, coming to take us home.

We were a team of 10 pastors, elders, singers, and technical staff, and we all climbed into a boat that was meant for four people! As we crossed the river, the waves would come to the very edge of our boat, but we weren’t afraid. Instead, we sang and talked merrily, inspired and invigorated by what we’d witnessed at the service. We believed the Lord would never abandon us.

If we do not doubt God and His guidance for our life, we need never be afraid of any “waves,” no matter how close to the edge of our “boat” they may come.
