In the dense rainforests of New Guinea lives a small, little-known lizard with one of the strangest features in the animal kingdom—green blood. Known as Prasinohaema, these skinks don’t just have green skin or scales; their very blood, muscles, and even bones are tinted bright green. The reason? Their bodies are filled with an unusual chemical called biliverdin, a bile pigment that in almost every other animal is dangerously toxic.

In humans and other vertebrates, even small amounts of biliverdin cause severe jaundice and can be life-threatening. Yet these skinks carry levels so high they would kill most creatures, and they survive without harm. This poses a huge problem for evolutionary explanations. How could a toxic compound slowly increase in an animal’s body without killing it long before the supposed “benefit” arrived? Evolution by gradual steps simply cannot account for such a system.

From a creation perspective, however, the answer is clear: these lizards were purposefully designed with special physiology to not only tolerate but thrive with biliverdin in their systems. Their ability to handle extreme amounts of what is otherwise poison demonstrates foresight and engineering that cannot be explained by chance mutations. The green-blooded skink is yet another reminder of God’s creativity and the vast variety He built into His creation.
