Sweet ripe strawberries are a favorite fruit around the world. But did you know it is the only fruit that wear its seeds on the outside? The average strawberry is speckled with over 200 seeds, which technically doesn’t make them a berry, like grapes, which have seeds on the inside. Actually, strawberries are a member of the rose family, which is why they smell as sweet as they taste.
The average American eats about three-and-a-half pounds of fresh strawberries each year. Most strawberry plants fall into two groups—June- bearing and ever-bearing. The June-bearing produces berries in June and the ever-bearing typically produces a crop in June and another in the fall. But a new type, called “day-neutral,” produces strawberries throughout the growing season—flowering regardless of the length of the period of light it is exposed to.
Followers of Jesus should not be seasonal Christians. They should be like ever-bearing plants that produce the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23) regardless of outward circumstances. Some believe that salvation by grace means fruit bearing is unnecessary. Though we are not saved by works, our salvation leads us to seek to obey God’s will.
Jesus explained, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me” (John 15:4). What is the purpose of staying united with Christ? “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit” (v. 8).
No matter our surroundings, when we are connected to Christ, our lives will reveal the fruits of His character. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (v. 5). Ever-bearing fruit in the life of a Christian reveals a sign of spiritual growth and indicates that we are truly abiding in Jesus.
