*By their fruits you shall know them...*
"Therefore, by their fruits you will know them" (Matthew 7:20).
We derive the benefits of a tree through its fruit. *A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit* (Matthew 7:18). Thus, *every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.*
When Jesus speaks about false prophets, He begins by saying, "Beware of false prophets," before teaching this passage. False prophets are those who perform miracles in His name without obeying Jesus' words. They cast out demons, prophesy, and perform many miracles in Jesus' name. Yet, Jesus says to them, *I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!* (Matthew 7:23). This is because even the devil can perform miraculous signs. The Bible states that the magicians of Egypt replicated many of the miracles Moses performed in Egypt.
Examine the lives of those who teach you God's word. Paul counsels Timothy, asking, *If a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?* (1 Timothy 3:5).
Even Paul, who wrote many books of the New Testament, says, *I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified* (1 Corinthians 9:27). In that case, we must reflect on just how carefully we ought to live our lives.
*Do not participate in the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them* (Ephesians 5:11).
Amen.
