Lesson One: Why God Doesn't Answer Certain Prayers

In James 4:3, we find a tender but honest truth:
"And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong; you want only what will give you pleasure."

To understand why James wrote this, it helps to look at what was happening around him. He was writing to an early Christian community going through a difficult season, one marked by selfishness, jealousy, pride, and competition. When their own efforts to get ahead weren't working, some began turning to prayer almost as a last resort, hoping God would simply bless what they already wanted.

James stepped in to expose this toxic mindset, reminding them (and us) that God also cares about the why behind our requests and not just the requests themselves. When we treat prayer like a divine vending machine to serve our own self-gratification, we miss the entire point of ask and you shall receive. Remember that God is good and righteous. And our prayers must be good and selfless too.

โ€‹ The Takeaway: Before you pray today, pause and check your motives. Shift the focus of your prayer from "What can God do to serve my plans?" to "is this prayer led by good intentions, selfless or selfishness?" When our motives change, the way we pray and the answers we receive will change too.

God bless .
