Need to know.
THE STATE OF THE DEAD, THEY ARE ASLEEP IN THE GRAVE UNTIL THE RESURRECTION.
The subject of death has confused millions of people for centuries. Many believe that when a person dies, they immediately go to heaven, hell, or purgatory. Yet the Bible presents a different picture. God's Word consistently teaches that death is a sleep, a state of unconscious rest, until the resurrection at the return of Jesus Christ.
When Jesus spoke of His friend Lazarus, He said, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep” (John 11:11). The disciples misunderstood Him, so Jesus explained plainly, “Lazarus is dead” (John 11:14). Christ compared death to sleep because those who die are unconscious and await awakening at the resurrection.
King Solomon wrote, “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5). The Bible does not say the dead are praising God in heaven or suffering in hell. Instead, it declares that the dead are unconscious, unaware of the passing of time, resting in their graves.
Psalm 146:4 confirms this truth: “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” At death, the body returns to dust, and the breath of life returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7). Human beings do not possess an immortal soul that lives independently of the body. Life itself is a gift from God, read Genesis 2:7 - And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Notice that man became a living soul, and not that a separate immortal soul was placed inside the man. The dust of the ground (body) + the breath of life (from God), = a living soul (being).
The Bible teaches that both the righteous and the wicked remain in their graves until the resurrection. Jesus declared, “The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth” (John 5:28-29). Notice that Christ said they are in the graves, not already receiving their final reward.
For believers, this is a message of hope. Paul wrote, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). The faithful who have fallen asleep in Jesus will be raised to everlasting life when Christ returns in glory.
The resurrection is the great hope of the Christian. Death is not the end. The grave is not the final destination. Those who trust in Christ rest peacefully until the trumpet sounds and the Life-Giver calls them forth from their dusty beds.
Likewise, the wicked will also be raised, but for judgment (John 5:29). God is just, and every person will stand before Him according to His righteous judgment.
This Bible truth protects us from deception. Satan's first lie was, “Ye shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). The Scriptures reveal that only God possesses immortality (1 Timothy 6:16), and eternal life is granted through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23).
What a glorious day it will be when Jesus appears in the clouds of heaven! Graves will open, the righteous dead will rise, and families separated by death will be reunited forever. Until that day, those who have died in faith are resting safely in Christ, awaiting the resurrection morning.
“Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice.” — John 5:28
May we place our trust in Jesus Christ, the Resurrection and the Life, and look forward with confidence to that blessed day when death will be swallowed up in victory forever.
