If You're Gonna Be a Bear,
Be a Grizzly Bear!

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.” Ecclesiastes 9:10
A friend and I were discussing home remodeling plans the other day. I was waffling on whether or not to proceed with a difficult and risky—but beautiful—plan, when he looked at me and said, “If you’re gonna be a bear, be a grizzly bear!”
What he meant, of course, was that if you’re going to do something, do it all the way, with all your heart. You’ve probably heard the sporting phrase, “Go big, or go home.” These are both ways of telling us to do our best at whatever we set our hands to.
What could be more difficult and riskier than choosing to follow in the footsteps of Christ? And what could be more beautiful? It’s the most important decision we’ll ever make—how will we follow and serve God?
As author Mark Lawrence wrote, “No half measures. Some things can’t be cut in half. You can’t half-love someone. You can’t half-betray, or half-lie.” You can’t half-believe in Christ. As believers, we are admonished in Scripture to pursue God and His ways with all our heart. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, He directly replied: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
Let’s heed Joshua’s challenge: “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15.
Choose, decide, and stay the course. Put your hand on the plow and don’t look back. For, as Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62 (ESV).
“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.” Philippians 3:13–16 (ESV).
No half measures. If you’re going to be a believer; be a believer—and do it with everything you have.
