Our Salvation Is Secure

“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13

Several years ago, my friend and spiritual mentor, Pastor C. A. Murray, asked the congregation, “Are you converted?” People hesitated to answer because they thought it was a trick question. If one were to say yes, was that being prideful or arrogant? If no, was one unchanged by the gospel? The question was confusing to many, but it need not have been.

And how about this question, “Will I be saved when Jesus comes?” Many people today grapple with the security of their salvation.

Now, before you assume that I’m promoting the idea of “once saved, always saved,” let me assure you that I’m absolutely not saying that. In fact, the Bible teaches that our names can indeed be blotted out of the Book of Life (Revelation 3:5). However, I’m saying that some folks have anxiety about their salvation, and that’s our focus here.

Why all this insecurity? Because we focus on ourselves and our flaws rather than on the flawless character of Jesus. We are often so self-focused that we become legalistic, rigid, and joyless. Instead of relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us as we abide in Christ, we get hung up on the minutiae of “do’s and don’ts” and forget about the Source of our power to forsake sin.

Let me share an example. I heard about a literature evangelist who was overtaken with fear and dread at the end of her life because she didn’t think she had been good enough to be saved. Her heart was so burdened! Imagine thinking that despite all of your life’s work to share the gospel with others, you wouldn’t be going to Heaven at Christ’s return!

She was visited by a missionary to whom she confessed that she never really knew Him despite all of her years of service to the Lord. The missionary shared the Redemption Story, and it finally resonated with her! She understood that Jesus loved her and had made a plan of salvation for her from the foundation of the world! She was reminded that if she confessed her sins, Jesus is “faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9. This precious woman went to sleep in Jesus, assured that she would see her Savior upon His return.

Beloved, many of you doubt that you will be saved. Now, if you’re living in sin and refusing to change, that’s one thing. But if you’re abiding in Christ—spending quality time with Him in prayer and reading His Word—you have eternal life!

How do we know this? 1 John 5:13 is one of my favorite verses for salvation security! It says (emphasis mine), “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” Our salvation is found in our faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, “the author and finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:2.

Praise God that our salvation is not left up to us! We would fail every time, but with Jesus at the helm of our lives, we cannot fail! He is El HaNe’eman, the Faithful God. Philippians 1:6 says, “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” So, be encouraged, beloved! If we continue to rely upon Jesus and honor Him through our lives, we have eternal life. Worship Him for His grace, power, and forgiveness.
