The Power of Words
From the very beginning, God spoke, and it happened.
“Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. Genesis 1:3
His Word brought creation into being. The Bible teaches that we are made in God’s image Genesis 1:27, and because of that, our words also carry incredible power.
Proverbs 18:21 tells us:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
Every day we have a choice. We can speak words that bring life, hope, healing, and encouragement, or words that wound, discourage, and destroy.
When I was growing up there was a saying:
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”
The truth is, that simply isn’t true.
My son Tyson, while preparing a sermon, gave that old saying a beautiful new ending:
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but the Word of God will heal my soul.”
What a powerful revelation.
Words matter.
Many of us still carry words that were spoken over us as children.
“You’ll never be enough.”
“You can’t do it.”
“No one will ever love you.”
“There’s something wrong with you.”
Those weren’t just careless comments. They became deep wounds that many carry into adulthood. Those wounds can shape our identity, affect our relationships, and even make it difficult to believe that God truly loves us or that people can be trusted.
But God speaks a different language.
Romans 4:17 says that God “calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” He speaks His promises before we can see them. He declares identity before we feel worthy of it. He calls us redeemed before we feel forgiven.
When we begin to speak words that agree with God’s Word, we are planting seeds of truth that will eventually produce fruit in our lives.
The opposite is also true. When we continually speak fear, doubt, shame, and unbelief, we strengthen the very lies that seek to keep us captive.
God invites us to replace those lies with His truth.
To exchange fear for faith.
Shame for acceptance.
Hopelessness for hope.
Bondage for freedom.
Isaiah 55:11 gives us this incredible promise:
“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
God’s Word never returns empty.
It always accomplishes His purpose.
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated the power of words.
He healed with words.
“Be healed.”
He forgave with words.
“Your sins are forgiven.”
He cast out demons with words.
“Come out!”
He resisted temptation with words.
“It is written…”
He calmed storms with words.
“Peace, be still.”
He raised the dead with words.
“Lazarus, come out!”
Where others saw impossibility, Jesus spoke life.
His words changed hearts, bodies, minds, circumstances, and even nature itself.
Then Jesus made an astounding promise:
“Whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do…” John 14:12
We have no power in our own words alone. Our authority comes when our words agree with His Word. As we speak the promises of God over our lives, our families, our circumstances, and those around us, we become vessels through whom His life flows.
So whose words will you choose to believe today?
The words of the enemy that say:
“You’ll never be enough.”
“You’ll never change.”
“There’s no hope.”
Or the words of your heavenly Father, who says:
“You are chosen.”
“You are loved.”
“You are forgiven.”
“You are My workmanship.”
“You are a new creation.”
Speak His Word.
Believe His Word.
Stand on His Word.
For His Word will accomplish everything He has sent it to do.
