“… ‘Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty!’ ….” Psalm 118:23

The first day of spring had arrived and with it the beautiful blooming flowers. It seemed as if all of southern Illinois were a garden. Red flowers, yellow flowers, green grass—they all suddenly appeared outside my window. And while it was impossible for me to picture it, every time there was a change of season I got a glimpse of how our Earth’s first week went.

Yes, spring is my favorite season. Only a talented, merciful Being like God can take a dead, broken, hopeless world and transform it into the most beautiful piece of art in the blink of an eye! A long time ago, I concluded that if He can take a dead tree and bring it to life, He can do the same work in us; and the Lord continues to change my life from dreary winter darkness into sun-soaked spring.

During times of loneliness or discouragement, He strengthens and renews me. He paints a new picture for me each day, making the sun shine in my heart—even when it rains. I can’t help but say, “I love you, Lord, my source of strength! The Lord is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge.” Psalm 18:1–2 (NET).

I have many talented friends that can draw the unimaginable, and I’ve seen many amazing works of art. But nothing has amazed me as much as God’s artwork! He doesn’t just exhibit His art on gallery walls, either—we all have the opportunity to observe His designs in the clouds, the flowers, the animals, and even in the wind.

But His best paintings are the ones He does inside our hearts. When we allow Him to do His work, we will never find anything less than a masterpiece in there! The condition He finds us in doesn’t matter. His creativity transforms any broken, filthy stone into a shining jewel.

Before He begins, He considers every damaged and torn part of our lives, in order to restore it. He even chose to live like we do in order to sympathize with us completely. “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15–16). His undivided attention to every detail makes each piece of art unique and precious.

Will you let Christ into your heart to make it into a most beautiful work of art? It will be a painting anyone can look at and admire—and others will recognize His work, because it will have His signature all over it!
