Light With No Shadow
During prayer this morning, I heard the words, “Light with no shadow.”
As I began researching, I discovered the concept of ambient light. Unlike a single beam of light that casts shadows, ambient light surrounds everything. It enters from every angle, filling every space so completely that shadows disappear. There is no single visible source, yet everything is illuminated equally.
Immediately my thoughts turned to God.
The Bible tells us,
“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5
God’s presence is like light that fills every space. He is not confined to one place or one moment. He is everywhere at once, illuminating every heart willing to receive Him. Nothing is hidden from His sight, and no darkness can overcome His light.
Ambient light shines equally on everything within a room. It does not choose one object over another. In a similar way, God’s grace is extended to all. His love is not partial or selective. His invitation is for everyone.
James gives us another beautiful picture:
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
God is constant. His character never changes. His love never fluctuates. Unlike earthly light that moves and creates changing shadows, God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Then another Scripture came to mind.
“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings.” Psalm 17:8
At first it seems like a contradiction.
If God is light with no darkness, how can there be a shadow under His wings?
The answer is found in the heart of God.
The shadow of His wings is not the shadow of darkness. It is the shadow of protection.
Like a mother bird stretching out her wings over her chicks, she stands between them and the scorching sun, the driving rain, or the approaching danger. Her shadow exists because she has placed herself between her young and whatever would harm them.
That is what God does for us.
His light drives away every darkness, while His wings shelter us from everything that seeks to destroy us.
He is both the light that guides our steps and the refuge that guards our hearts.
Today, perhaps you need the brilliance of His light to expose fear, confusion, or despair. Or perhaps you simply need the quiet shelter of His wings while the storms rage around you.
Whichever you need today, He is already there.
His light surrounds you.
His wings cover you.
And in Him, there is no darkness at all.
