THIS DAY IN HYMN HISTORY - JULY 21

Priscilla Jane Owens was born on July 21, 1839, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She was an American Sunday school teacher and prolific hymn writer who authored more than 200 hymns, many of which were written to encourage children and young people in the Christian faith.

Among her best-known hymns are:

"We Have an Anchor" (music by William J. Kirkpatrick)

"Jesus Saves!" (lyrics by Priscilla J. Owens; music by William J. Kirkpatrick)

"Will Your Anchor Hold?" (often known by its opening line, "Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?")

"Give Me Jesus" (not to be confused with the traditional spiritual of the same name)

Owens served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher for decades, and many of her hymns emphasize evangelism, assurance, steadfast faith, and trust in Christ.

She died on July 5, 1907.
