MEDITATIONS ON SPIRIT AND LIFE
REPENT! THE KING IS COMING
Matthew 4:17
"From that time on, Jesus began to preach, saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.'"
After his baptism and his victory over temptation in the desert, Jesus began his public ministry. His first message, echoing the words of John the Baptist, was a clear call to repentance, for the Kingdom of God had come near in his person.
Jesus' message rests on two inseparable truths.
- The Kingdom of Heaven is near. God is at work, reigning, and calling people to enter his Kingdom. This kingdom, embodied in the presence of Jesus, demands a response.
- Repent. One cannot enter the Kingdom without a change of heart. Repentance means turning away from sin, the world, and its pleasures to turn to God with faith and obedience.
The proclamation of the Kingdom is not only a promise of hope, but above all, an urgent call to a transformed life.
Don't put off until tomorrow what God asks of you today. The King is coming; He will return soon. He is calling you; respond to Him with sincere repentance and a life submitted to His will.
Lord, search my heart, remove me from all that grieves You, and make me a faithful citizen of Your Kingdom. Amen.
