Change the Atmosphere
When Jesus arrived at Jairus’ house, the atmosphere was filled with grief, weeping, and hopelessness. The mourners cried loudly because, in their eyes, the little girl was dead. By sending everyone outside, Jesus removed the voices that had already accepted death as the final outcome.
Then Jesus spoke words that completely changed the atmosphere:
“She is not dead but asleep.” Mark 5:39
The crowd laughed at Him because they only saw death. Jesus, however, saw life. He wasn’t denying reality; He was declaring Heaven’s reality. Before speaking life into the situation, He put the unbelieving crowd outside. He removed the voices of fear, doubt, and despair, creating an atmosphere where faith could flourish.
“After He put them all out, He took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with Him, and went in where the child was.” Mark 5:40
Sometimes we find ourselves in seasons where everything around us seems filled with sorrow, disappointment, or fear. If we’re not careful, we’ll allow the atmosphere around us to shape our faith instead of allowing our faith to change the atmosphere.
The Bible says:
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10
Joy isn’t pretending everything is fine. Joy is choosing to trust God even when circumstances say otherwise.
Isaiah 61:3 tells us that God gives us:
“The oil of joy instead of mourning, and the garment of praise instead of a spirit of heaviness.”
Praise changes the atmosphere. Worship shifts our focus from the problem to the One who has power over the problem. As we exchange mourning for praise and despair for joy, we make room for the Holy Spirit to move in our hearts.
Jesus changed the atmosphere before He performed the miracle. Perhaps God is inviting us to do the same, not by denying our pain, but by choosing faith over fear, praise over despair, and hope over hopelessness.
When the atmosphere changes, hearts change. Faith rises. Peace comes. And we become more aware of God’s presence and His power at work among us.
Today, ask yourself:
What atmosphere am I creating?
Is it one of fear and discouragement, or one of faith, praise, and expectation?
Invite the Holy Spirit to fill your heart with His joy, and watch what He can do.
