Masses for the dead
The Catholic saint Odilo was Abbot of Cluny. He had a vision, similar to other Catholic saints or mystics, of souls suffering terribly in purgatory. This vision led him to the unbiblical practice of having special masses said on the behalf of these souls in all the churches affiliated with Cluny. This new practice soon spread.
