THE ROCK AND THE ROLE

INTRODUCTION

THE last 8 years have been incredibly difficult for me and my family including major health issues that disabled me leaving me incapable of doing very basic things. So I was going through a trial unlike any I had before. Some of those things I can't even speak on because they are too personal and too heartbreaking.

So when 5 years ago I caught some scenes from the show, The Chosen, I was so deeply moved by seeing the interactions between Jesus and the people, the apostles I was and continue to be in tears at these beautifully crafted scenes. I love this show for that and highly recommend the show on the basis of that alone. It was responsible for stirring a desire within me to return to God.

But a reoccurring theme in the show reflects a rather dangerous misunderstanding based more on the Catholic teachings of the cast than on actual Scripture. It's a teaching we touched on in one of our monthly exclusive videos that are not promoted as the regular Monday and Friday videos are, but are available on my Rumble channel. This teaching comes from Matthew 16:18
18] And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

It is the account of when Jesus asked his disciples who they believed Him to be and some said one thing others said something else, but Peter stood up and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” And that is what prompts Jesus’ response in verse 18.

Why is the catholic understanding of this verse dangerous? Because they are taught that Jesus made Peter the rock and that Jesus was building his church on the foundation of Peter. This necessitated another false doctrine known as Apostolic Succession. In this teaching the church is founded upon Peter who was granted the authority to change doctrines within the church and pass that authority down to the next “rock” and so on and so on.

This false doctrine led to yet another false doctrine that claimed that as the foundation of the church was the newly founded role of the Papacy and as such any pronouncement made by that human foundation of the church would of course have to be infallible.

These teachings spiraled out of control as new Popes added the doctrines of purgatory, praying to the saints, the perpetual virginity of Mary necessitating the removal of the scene from the Chosen where in Scripture, Mary and her other children sought Jesus out to speak with Him in order to confront Him on His preaching and he rebuked them. All of this came from a profoundly mistaken interpretation of verse 18.

It is grammatically impossible for this verse to be claiming that Peter was ‘the rock’. One feature of Koine Greek that isn't found in English is the use of different spellings of articles, “the, this, that” based on the gender of the word it is referring to. In Greek, a word can be masculine, feminine or neuter. However, the masculine article is never used to reference a feminine or neuter noun. And vice versa.

Literally from the Greek, verse 18 says this, ‘And I also say to thee, that thou art a rock, and upon this rock I will build my assembly, and gates of Hades shall not prevail against it;’

Jesus calls Peter, “a piece of a rock.” Or, a broken off piece. When Jesus says, “upon this rock” the article cannot refer to Peter as being the rock as it is in the neuter or indefinite gender. If Peter had been the rock, the article would have to be masculine. So using the rules of Koine Greek we track backwards through the verse in Greek to the previous neuter or indefinite subject to see what Jesus is actually saying.

And when we do we, see he is referring not to Peter, but to Peter's confession. “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

So the church is built on the fact that Jesus is who He said He was. The church is built on the identity of Christ as we explored in our video on Rumble entitled, “De-Jesus-ing Jesus”. This one blatantly false misinterpreted passage has led to millions being deceived into embracing the doctrines of demons as the Apostle Paul would later say in 1 Timothy 4.

I would never demand the someone else watch or not watch a show based on this but I do advise caution. Take the good of what you see and do not confuse Catholic doctrines with biblical doctrines, for they are definitely not the same.
