Today’s Scripture

John 1:44 (ESV)
“Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.”

Opening the Scriptures
At first glance, this verse may seem to contain only a geographical detail. John simply tells us where Philip came from. Yet under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, every word of Scripture has purpose.

Bethsaida was the hometown of Andrew, Peter, and Philip. God had already been working in that small community before Jesus publicly called His disciples. Andrew had already brought Peter to Jesus. Now Jesus called Philip. Tomorrow we will see Philip bringing Nathanael to Christ. God’s work often spreads through ordinary relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and fellow workers.

This reminds us that the Lord is always at work long before we recognize it. He prepares hearts, opens doors, and arranges circumstances according to His perfect plan. None of the disciples understood the full picture, but God did.

The same is true today. We may feel that our town, workplace, or neighborhood is too small or too unimportant for God to use. Yet our Lord delights in calling ordinary people from ordinary places to accomplish extraordinary purposes for His glory.

Our usefulness to Christ is not determined by where we were born, our education, our wealth, or our social standing. It is determined by His sovereign grace. Jesus did not search for the most influential men in Jerusalem. He called fishermen from Galilee and transformed them into faithful witnesses who carried the gospel throughout the world.

Never underestimate what God can accomplish through one life that is fully surrendered to Him.

A simple invitation, a word of encouragement, a faithful testimony, or an act of Christian love may become the means God uses to bring another soul to Christ.

Living God’s Word Today
Perhaps today you feel unnoticed or insignificant. Remember Philip. Scripture introduces him simply as a man from Bethsaida. Yet God knew his name, called him personally, and used him in His eternal plan.

The Lord knows exactly where you are today. He has placed you where you are for His purpose. Be faithful where He has planted you. Speak of Christ with humility, love others sincerely, and trust God with the results. The God who called Philip still calls ordinary people to serve an extraordinary Savior.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You call ordinary people by Your sovereign grace. Help us to be faithful where You have placed us. Give us hearts that are willing to follow Christ and courage to point others to Him. May our lives bring glory to Your holy name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
