A Place of Refuge and Mercy
Scripture
Joshua 20:3 (NKJV)
That the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood
God Makes a Way for Mercy
Joshua chapter 20 establishes the cities of refuge. These cities were places of protection for those who caused harm unintentionally. God made provision so that justice would be balanced with mercy. The cities were accessible clearly marked and available to anyone who needed refuge.
This chapter reveals God’s heart. He is a God of justice but also a God of mercy. He understands human weakness error and brokenness. Rather than leaving people exposed to immediate judgment God provided a place to run a place to be heard and a place to be protected.
The cities of refuge point forward to a greater truth fulfilled in Christ. God Himself becomes our refuge. When we are guilty broken afraid or overwhelmed He provides safety restoration and grace. God does not ignore justice but He offers mercy through a way He has prepared.
For believers today Joshua 20 reminds us that God is not distant when we fail or fall short. He invites us to run to Him not away from Him. In Him we find protection forgiveness and restoration.
Reflection Questions
1. Do I see God as a refuge when I am afraid or have failed
2. Am I quick to run to God or do I hide from Him
3. How can I reflect God’s mercy to others who need grace
Prayer
Lord God thank You for being my refuge and my place of safety. When I am weak or afraid help me to run to You and not away from You. Teach me to rest in Your mercy and to extend that same mercy to others. In Jesus name Amen.
