“FOLLOW ME” — THE JOURNEY OF A DISCIPLE
YOU FOLLOW ME
John 21:22 (LLV) —
“Jesus said to him, ‘If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.’”
Peter had just received
a deeply personal call
from Jesus.
But almost immediately,
he looked
at another disciple
and asked,
“What about him?”
It is such
a human question.
What about
his journey?
Why is her life
different from mine?
Why did their prayer
receive an answer
before mine?
Why does their road
seem easier?
Why has God
given them opportunities
He has not
given me?
Comparison
can quietly steal
our attention
from the One
we are following.
Jesus did not
explain John's future
to Peter.
He simply said,
“What is that
to you?”
In other words,
John's journey
belonged to John.
Peter's journey
belonged to Peter.
And Jesus
would faithfully lead
them both.
Then came
the words
that brought Peter
back to what mattered:
“You
follow Me.”
Not:
Follow the crowd.
Not:
Follow the person
whose life
you admire.
Not:
Follow only
when you understand
where the road leads.
“Follow Me.”
There will always
be someone
whose life
looks different
from ours.
Someone
who seems
farther ahead.
Someone
whose blessings
look greater.
Someone
whose path
we do not understand.
But Jesus
never asked us
to walk
their road.
He asks us
to faithfully walk
the one
He has placed
before us.
Perhaps that is
where this entire series
has been leading.
We have learned
to follow
without delay.
To listen
for His voice.
To speak
His truth.
To serve.
To trust
His timing.
And now,
at the end,
Jesus brings us
back to the beginning.
“You follow Me.”
One disciple.
One Savior.
One step
at a time.
A new beginning keeps its eyes on Jesus:
trusting that we do not need to understand someone else's journey in order to faithfully walk the path Christ has given us.
Reflection: Have I been comparing my journey with someone else's instead of keeping my attention on where Jesus is leading me?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me when I take my eyes from You and begin comparing my life with others. Help me trust that You know the road You have chosen for me. Give me grace to celebrate what You are doing in the lives of others while faithfully walking the path You have placed before me. Wherever You lead and whatever lies ahead, keep my eyes fixed on You. I choose again today to follow You. Amen
