Today’s Scripture
John 1:46 (ESV)
“Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’”
Opening the Scriptures
Nathanael’s first response to hearing about Jesus was one of doubt. Nazareth was an insignificant village with no great reputation. In his mind, nothing of lasting value could possibly come from such a place.
How often do we make the same mistake? We judge by appearances. We look at a person’s background, education, wealth, nationality, or social position and make conclusions before we have seen what God is doing.
Philip did not argue with Nathanael. He did not enter into a long debate or try to win an intellectual discussion. He simply gave one invitation:
“Come and see.”
That is still one of the greatest invitations Christians can give. We cannot change a person’s heart, but we can faithfully point them to Jesus. The Holy Spirit does the work that no human argument can accomplish.
God has often chosen what the world considers weak, small, and insignificant to display His glory. Jesus Himself was born in humble circumstances and grew up in a town many despised. Yet He is the eternal Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the Savior of the world.
Our responsibility is not to convince people by clever words but to faithfully present Christ and invite them to know Him.
Living God’s Word Today
Perhaps today you are tempted to judge a situation by what you see with your eyes. Remember that God’s ways are higher than ours. He often works where the world least expects Him.
If someone questions your faith or doubts the power of Christ, do not become discouraged or argumentative. Instead, follow Philip’s example. Live a Christ-centered life, share the truth of Scripture, and lovingly say, “Come and see.”
The same Savior who called Philip continues to call people today, and He is still transforming lives for His glory.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, guard us from judging by outward appearances. Give us hearts that trust Your wisdom above our own. Help us faithfully point others to Jesus with humility, love, and confidence in Your Word. May our lives continually invite others to “come and see” the glory of Christ. In His precious name we pray. Amen.
