This month, we are praying for the city of Suzhou on China's east coast. This city was once described as "paradise on earth" by ancient Chinese poets, and as the "Venice of the East" by Marco Polo, due to the canals running through the old city. Today, it remains a peaceful and wealthy city.
Protestant missionaries first arrived in Suzhou in the 1850's. Today, it remains a site of the Chinese house church. Will you join us this month as we pray for the churches in Suzhou?

August 3 - Historically, Suzhou has been known as “paradise on earth” because of its natural beauty and classical gardens. May the city become more than just paradise on earth, but pray that God’s Kingdom can fully arrive on this land.
August 4 - One local pastor compares Suzhou to “a shy, refined lady from a good family.” The many bridges and waterways of the city created an environment that is easygoing, peaceful, and pleasant to live in. Please give thanks to God for this peaceful environment, and may it become fertile soil for the gospel.
August 5 - Because Suzhou is near the east coast of China and has a vast network of waterways, Hudson Taylor used it as a base for evangelizing the rest of the province. Please give thanks to God for Suzhou’s unique geographic location and historical significance in China’s church history.
August 6 - Suzhou has been known for its wealth and still boasts of the province’s highest GDP. A developed economy plus beautiful scenery leads to leisurely and even hedonistic living. Please pray that the people in Suzhou would not be content with their wealth, but look to the true treasure in Christ.
August 7 - In addition to wealth, Suzhou is home to many large Buddhist, Daoist, and folk religion temples, making idol worship a common practice among the locals. Please pray that God will open the eyes of Suzhou’s citizens to know the one true God.
August 8 - Suzhou is home to 18 major universities, led by Suzhou University, which was founded by Methodist missionaries at the beginning of 20th Century. Please pray that the Lord will lead the university students in Suzhou to find their future and hope in Christ.
