“Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.” Ecclesiastes 11:9

My family consisted of my mother and brother, but the streets brought me up more than they did. It was as if we did not know about God, and we certainly did not talk about Him. Only my grandmother would tell me occasionally to pray before I went to bed. But how could that affect me, when I was young and hungry for entertainment?

My daily routine depressed me, and in my heart, I constantly felt an emptiness. I thought it was nothing but boredom, but as it turned out, it was really from the absence of God, even though I didn’t realize it right away.

I began to smoke and I was always on a continuous search for something better. But I was looking for better in all the wrong places. Sadly, I felt like life was as good as it would ever be.

After another night in a disco, a heavy feeling of guilt rolled over me. I didn’t know why, but something inside me knew that I was not living right. Maybe the words of my grandmother from childhood were coming back to me, or maybe it was God speaking to me through my conscience.

After that, I began to try to control my speech in order to get rid of the swear words. I also understood that I should quit smoking, because it was a bad habit. There were several unsuccessful attempts. Then, one day, a relative invited me to a Bible course, which I attended with her.

This event was something diametrically opposite to the discos and parties, but it was there that an inner peace came over me. I realized it was what I had been looking for all my life, and God gave me this through His love, showing me the right path and inviting me to follow it.

Of course, I agreed, and after some time, I was baptized. Before my baptism, I said to God, “Lord, I will be baptized, but please, please, deliver me from smoking,” and He did!

After my baptism, I never lit another cigarette, and there was no desire! I haven’t missed anything by knowing God. On the contrary, I have acquired a new character, new friends, a purpose in life, and a relationship with the Lord. The most important thing I learned is that we are actually happier when we give than when we receive.
