As I meditate on the Sermon on the Mount, I am deeply encouraged by Jesus’ teaching about the principles of the Kingdom of God. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is presented as the promised King, and throughout this sermon the King explains the values and character of His kingdom. One of the key themes in Matthew’s Gospel is the “Kingdom of Heaven” and who will inherit it.

Jesus begins this powerful sermon with the first Beatitude: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). These words reveal the foundation of the Christian life. To be poor in spirit means to recognize our spiritual poverty and our complete dependence on God’s mercy. It is the humble acknowledgment that we cannot earn salvation through our own goodness or works. Instead, we come to God through Jesus Christ, trusting entirely in His saving grace.

Those who are poor in spirit understand their need for redemption, forgiveness, and repentance. They willingly turn from sin and place their faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. They hunger and thirst for God, seeking His presence and living by His grace. Such people receive God’s mercy and become heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus declares these humble believers to be truly blessed because they have found the greatest treasure—the hope of eternal life in Christ. May we always approach God with humble hearts, trusting in His grace alone.

Thank you, and God bless you. Love God and love people.
