Today’s Scripture
John 1:48 (ESV)
“Nathanael said to him, ‘How do you know me?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.’”
Opening the Scriptures
Nathanael was amazed. He had never met Jesus before, yet Jesus spoke as though He knew him personally. Nathanael’s question was natural: “How do You know me?”
Jesus’ answer revealed far more than Nathanael expected: “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
We are not told exactly what Nathanael was doing beneath the fig tree. He may have been praying, meditating on Scripture, or seeking God’s direction. Whatever took place there was known perfectly by Jesus.
John’s purpose is not to satisfy our curiosity about the fig tree but to reveal the identity of Christ. Jesus is not merely a wise teacher or a prophet. He is the eternal Son of God who possesses divine knowledge. Nothing escapes His sight.
This truth should transform the way we live. There is never a moment when Christ is unaware of our circumstances. He sees our joys, our struggles, our disappointments, and our tears. He knows the burdens we carry that no one else understands.
Sometimes we may feel forgotten or alone. Yet the Lord never loses sight of His people. Before anyone else noticed Nathanael, Jesus already knew him. Before we ever sought Christ, He knew us completely.
What wonderful comfort this brings to every believer. The One who calls us is the One who knows us perfectly.
Living God’s Word Today
Perhaps today you are carrying a burden that no one else knows. Remember that your Savior sees you.
He knows your prayers before you speak them. He understands your fears before you express them. He is never surprised by your circumstances, and He never abandons those who belong to Him.
Because Christ knows us perfectly, we can trust Him completely. Let us bring every concern before Him with confidence, knowing that our loving Savior sees, knows, and cares for His children.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You know us completely and love us perfectly through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to trust You in every circumstance, remembering that nothing in our lives is hidden from Your sight. Strengthen our faith, comfort our hearts, and teach us to rest confidently in Your sovereign care. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.
