Excerpt From 'A Safe Haven'

Her mind went back to her interrupted prayer: “God, I know you’re there. I know you see and hear. It looks so dire right now, but your Word says you’ll never leave me nor forsake me, unlike so many in my life. Your Word says: ‘My God shall supply all my needs according to his riches in glory, by Christ Jesus.’ I can’t see how we’re going to get thru this financial devastation; right now, I need so much, just to get out of the end of the year. I can’t see a way Lord, but I trust you to keep your Word. Please show me the way.

Provide in abundance. Make a way where there is no way. Show the enemy, and the people who follow him, that he can’t take away my provision, because you are the one who provides. He can’t steal my joy forever. He can’t destroy any more than you allow. God help me find the right path. Show me, every single step, as if I’m a child. Make a way. Thank you once again… my true father... I’ll just keep working and helping families, and watch you create a path through the mire.”

She began to silently pray the other prayers God heard so regularly; the ones for a life’s companion that was true. The ones for her family. The ones to not be alone in such a hostile world with so many evil men and women. Her thoughts went to Jake… wishing… but he’d never wanted more than a friendship, and being his friend was so precious to her…

And once again she heard that still, small voice, whisper…. “I’ve got this… you keep doing your part, and I’ll do my part… watch it unfold… I’ve called you to a work that will be difficult, but I’ll send a helper… soon you will begin to understand why all this is happening. You will know true fear, but don’t be afraid. You will see things that astound you; but stay calm. Guard against deception; things aren’t always as they seem. Let me show you the real enemy. Let me use you to make a difference. Let me lead you to the calling I placed upon you so long ago. Are you willing? Are you ready? It’s time.”

A chill went up her spine. She could have sworn she heard a sharp intake of breath from someone just behind her, in fear at the words that still seemed to linger in the night air. She turned to look and see who was there, but the night held nothing she could see. She ‘felt’ a presence, but it wasn’t visible. Like so often lately, she could ‘feel’ the darkness becoming more palpable, and sense that something was coming to an end—and something else was about to begin. She smelled a stench that seemed to permeate the air around her. It was like nothing she’d ever smelled before.

All her life she’d felt a calling. A ‘knowing’ that there was something she was supposed to do. The hunger to understand, leading her to endless hours of bible study, conversations with others who loved the word; the countless sermons, and podcasts she’d listened to for as long as she could remember. Absorbing. Learning. Wringing, every possible nuance she could from each phrase, each individual word, each scholarly voice as they taught in their sphere of influence. Studying. Thinking. Praying. Preparation for she knew not what, just that she had to continue to strengthen her heart, mind, soul, and spirit. And above all…to be ready…

As the wind around her began to pick up, the sound whistling through the tree limbs increased exponentially. She heard shrieks, wails, and moans that were more than human; not animal; not nature; but unmistakably there. When she unexpectedly turned toward the house faster than her usual pace, she caught a glimpse—for just a fraction of a heartbeat—of a face that was almost human, but with something completely wrong. It was such an infinitesimally short a sight, that it was shocking how it imprinted itself into her brain; seared forever into her memory so that she would always be able to describe it, to the minutest detail.

It that heartbeat of time she read the look in a way that could not be her understanding alone; Holy Spirit intel showed her fear, anger, malevolence, and a determination to stomp her out of the picture in the most viscous way possible…. but also, the clear knowledge that it knew it could not touch her…
…yet…
